USCG PFD type code elimination should help paddlers select better vests

Instead of being required to wear a type III USCG approved vest for races, race participants can now select a vest that better fits their specific needs.  I prefer to use the David Mock vest for offshore paddling if required.  I race surfskis which really require a vest that releases water weight and has a smooth front for wet reentry situations.  The Mock vest is by far one of the best I have seen but it is not USCG certified.  Now it won't matter and paddlers can choose the best equipment to meet their unique needs.

Effective October 22, 2014, the U.S. Coast Guard has removed references to longstanding PFD type codes from its regulations for the carriage and marking of Coast Guard-approved PFDs; however, USCG regulations still require the carriage of "U.S. Coast Guard approved" PFDs. Title 33, Code of Federal Regulation 175.17(3)(c) "Racing shells, rowing sculls, racing canoes and racing kayaks are exempted from the requirements for carriage of any Type PFD." 33 CFR 175.3 Definitions: "Racing shell, rowing scull, racing canoe, and racing kayak means a manually propelled vessel that is recognized by national or international racing associations for use in competitive racing and one in which all occupants row, scull, or paddle, with the exception of a coxswain, if one is provided, and is not designed to carry and does not carry any equipment not solely for competitive racing." All boaters under the age of 12 must wear an approved U.S. Coast Guard PFD. State laws/regulations can enhance a U.S. Coast Guard Regulation - some northern States require the wearing of a USCG approved PFD during specified dates.
