Bluesway Intermediate to Advanced paddle July 6th 2013

Paddling Pasco Bluesway Program is offering a group paddle on July 6th 2013 for experienced paddlers.  Paddling from Hudson Beach, Florida USA north 5.3 miles to the future Sunwest Park.  The trip will be in open water, mostly shallow.  Launch 2pm so please drop off boats to the southwest parking lot area of Hudson Beach no later than 1pm.  Vehicles will need to be parked at the exit location, the future Sunwest Park by 1:30pm.  Shuttle will be provided to get you back to the launch location.  There is no charge for this trip.

This is not a beginners trip to the open gulf and length of trip.  Paddlers are encouraged to pay close attention to weather, heat and wind conditions.  Please bring water, a snack, pdf, whistle, etc.  We will maintain an easy but steady 3 knot pace with a break or two.

Additional info: 

The future Sunwest Park is located north of Hudson Beach on Old Dixie Highway.  There will be some directional signage to help.  The entrance to the park property will be on the west thru a huge steel gate.  Parking will be west of the gate well into the future park site.

Boats will need to be unloaded at Hudson Beach quickly to avoid traffic congestion.  Please be prepared to do so.  We will try to help you unload if possible.

The lakes at future park are crystal clear and will provide a good place to cool off after the trip.  The lakes are very deep.  We will give some details about future park plans for development.  Its going to be a beautiful park & we get to enjoy it early.

All paddlers are required to wear a PDF, sign a waiver, etc.  Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellant, drinks, snacks, camera, towel, etc.

This is a fairly natural portion of the coastline so sealife should be abundant.

High tide is at 12pm/low tide 7pm at Hudson Beach.  This trip should take approximately 2.5 hours on the water.

Outdoor storage of surfski

I moved into a smaller house with a garage that is not big enough to store a 22' surfski. Here is how I properly stored my ski outdoors without sun or moisture damage in sunny high humidity Florida. I looked online and all the covers seem so expensive. I thought about it alot & finally got the perfect solution.  I picked up an industrial thickness white vinyl tarp cover.  Don't use the cheaper home depot variety.  Get the high quality thick industrial stuff in white.  I cut it in strips so that I could cover several boats.  I also found a silver/gray elasticized gray boat cover which someone got rid of (likely for a 20 foot boat) which I lay over the white vinyl.  Two layers of protection.  How fortunate!  Its elastic ends fit perfectly over my surfski. I use 4 straps to keep the cover firmly in place in high winds.  I store it in the shade of the trees and pool screen to keep it cool.  Finally, if you need to, you can run a combo lock cable thru the venturi port to protec

My first surfski a Futura sport

I raced and surfed this boat for at least 5 years.  It's very tough.  I originally picked this up from a guy in Orlando.  I was looking for a retro Magnum P.I. type surfski.  I didn't know about the high-tech carbon fiber models at the time.  I later used it as a trainer for newbies.  My brother-in-law now owns it.  The stripes, handles, and seat padding I added to it.  It had metal rudder cables, aluminum kick-up rudder, and aluminum rudder pedals. Very durable to own for many years.  I'm glad to have owned a classic boat as well as the modern ones.  There are rivers I was able to race in this one that I wouldn't have considered bringing a more expensive lighter boat.
